In December 1966, Merlyn started the accounting firm that is now known as Winther, Stave & Co., LLP. He received a degree in business from the American Institute of Business and Drake University Community College. Merlyn has been active in many organizations over the years: Jaycees in Des Moines and Spencer, served for 16 years on the Trinity Lutheran Church Council, Bethphage Mission Executive Board, Spencer YMCA Board Member; Spencer Y’s Men; and President of United Way of Spencer. Currently he is proud to serve and share his experience and knowledge as a board member of Spencer Industries Foundation, member of Spencer Ambassadors, Treasurer of Spencer Alliance for A Creative Economy, a Trustee of Spencer Community Theater, and long-term member of Spencer Hy-Noon Kiwanis. During his career, Merlyn has worked in the numerous facets of accounting, auditing, tax, and consulting. Merlyn retired in 1997 but continues to be a part of the firm. Merlyn is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants. Merlyn and his wife Sonna have been married for over 50 years and have two children, Julie, a CPA and tax manager for TransAmerica, and Steve, an engineer in the oil industry. Merlyn and Sonna enjoy their three grandchildren - all a little above average.
